Role of governors

Saxmundham Primary School Governors are a team of people made up of parents, school staff, local community and councillors.

The Governors are responsible for the safe and proper management of the school.  They work voluntarily to ensure high standards of education within the school and to support the interests of children.

The Governors determine the spending programme of the school budget, oversee maintenance of the building and grounds, approve staffing and curriculum arrangements, keep aware of current initiatives and ensure that the school meets its legal requirements.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please speak to the Headteacher.

Please note that only one of our governors, Rob Bamford (Suffolk One Staff Governor), currently has a governance roles in another school.

Chair of Governors: Mr Robin Potter can be contacted via the school office (tel. 01728 602205).

LA Northern Area Office: Mrs S Boardman, Area Manager, Schools and Communities, Adrian House, Alexandra Road, Lowestoft, NR32 1PL.

Mr Tom Boswell
(Co Chair)

I joined as a parent Governor shortly after my first child joined the school and she is due to leave this year. I work for BT based at Martlesham where I started as an apprentice. I’ve held a variety of roles over the years mainly within networks and IT. I now lead on network strategy looking at how we bring Fibre networks to UK homes and businesses. I’m a STEM ambassador promoting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects in school and how important they are to the workplace. I’m also involved in the leadership of Connections church which meets in the school on a Sunday. I enjoy spending time with my family on bike rides and watching films!

Mr Rob Bamford
(Co Chair)
Rob has held several senior management roles in education and is currently the Director of Curriculum Quality at Suffolk One as well as the Staff Governor. In addition to this he fulfils examining and moderator roles with qualification organisations. Rob has extensive experience working with student data and establishing systems to bring about changes to improve student progress. During his spare time Rob enjoys undertaking DIY projects, spending time with his wife and 2 children, who currently attend the school.

Mr Robin Potter
Robin retired a few years back after working in Telecommunications for BT, Cable & Wireless and Mobile Systems International.  He has  been a governor at various local schools over the years and has been with Saxmundham Primary School for 13 years.  Current interests include gardening, fishing and sorting out the roof at St John’s Church for which he has secured the promise of Lottery funding.

Mr Edward Pearson-Shaul
(Headteacher)

Ed Pearson-Shaul has been the headteacher at Saxmundham Primary School since September 2014; previously he was a headteacher in Norfolk for 5 ½ years. Ed initially trained to teach secondary PE and taught in West Suffolk for 5 years before moving over to primary education in 1999. He is a firm believer that all primary aged children should receive a well-balanced, rounded education that prepares them for Secondary school academically, emotionally, culturally and socially. He has a particular interest in the development of emotional intelligence and well-being; two areas that can all too easily be undervalued in children’s development. He retains his love for, and promotion of, physical activity having been an avid player of team sports since his own school days. In his spare time, Ed enjoys keeping fit, watching films and he has just embarked on completing his MA in Education at the University of East Anglia.

Ms Lorna Denham
Lorna has taught at the school since 2006 and is currently phase leader for Key Stage 2, a member of the Friends of Saxmundham Primary School and a staff governor. Whilst her strongest interests are science and maths, she loves primary teaching because of the wide range of subjects covered. She enjoys reading crime novels and popular science books, watching nature programmes, following the England cricket team, listening to classical music (and Michael Buble), theatre and cinema trips, Pilates, nail art, walking by the sea and eating out with friends. She has been a teacher since 1994 and before that worked in market research and advertising.

Miss Racheal McNair
I have worked within Early Years for over ten years. Starting as an apprentice, Ive been committed to many roles, from practitioner to manager within varied settings across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, from huge 152 place nurseries to small community ones. In my spare time I enjoy going to the gym, playing music, singing and socialising with friends. I won Educational Leader of the Year at the Suffolk County Council Raising the Bar Awards 2016. This award was open to all educational establishments across Suffolk from early years education through to secondary education (i.e. 0 18 years) and represents a huge achievement and recognition of my skill and expertise.

Mrs Lisa Hadley

Mr Matthew Dawkins

Matthew runs a local events company. He has been working as a DJ for over 30 years, starting out with school disco's at his local primary school and now working in Central London, Blackpool at at a number of the Cambridge student unions. He has a daughter in year 4 and has been actively involved in a number of school events providing PA and other fun treats (you may have had an ice cream at the school summer fete).

Mr Keith Cartwright-Jones

Keith is currently Site Manager at the school having spent the majority of his working career in the Armed Forces and HM Prison service. He has served as a governor since 2011, and is currently vice chair of the Friends of Saxmundham Primary School (FOSPS), and been an active committee member for almost 10 years. Keith runs Saxmundham Judo club in the local community as senior club coach in his spare time.

  Mrs Alison Fox

Ali is a freelance graphic designer and also works part-time as an assistant in the school office. She is currently chair of the Friends of Saxmundham Primary School (FOSPS) which organises fundraising events throughout the year in order to provide the children with facilities and equipment that the school might not otherwise be able to afford. Ali lives in Saxmundham with her husband and two children, both of whom currently attend the school. In her spare time Ali is a keen runner.
